SOP: what it means for students

Statement of purpose. What it means, who decides it and where to check the official source.

An SOP is a personal essay that explains why you want to study a program; schools and visa officers may ask for one, and it should be your own.

In more detail

A statement of purpose explains your background, why you chose the program and school, and what you plan to do afterward. It is written in your own words and should be consistent with the rest of your documents.

Some schools ask for one, some do not, and each sets its own expectations for the content. The best starting point is the school's instructions.

A counsellor can talk through structure and point out gaps, but the statement must be your own work. Copied or ghost-written statements can cause serious problems with an application.

Who decides

The school or authority requesting it decides what it needs.

Where to check

What to ask a counsellor

  • How do I make sure my SOP matches my documents and my own story?
  • What should I not do when I write an SOP?
