LOR: what it means for students
Letter of recommendation. What it means, who decides it and where to check the official source.

An LOR is a letter from a teacher or employer who knows your work; some programs ask for one, and the school sets the format.
In more detail
A letter of recommendation is written by someone who can speak about your studies or work, such as a teacher, supervisor or employer. It supports an application by giving an outside view.
Not every program asks for one. Where it does, the school usually says how many, who may write them, and how they are sent.
Give the writer time and the facts they need. The letter is theirs; it should not be drafted for them and signed.
Who decides
Each school decides whether it needs letters and in what form.
Where to check

Also read the target school's own application page.
What to ask a counsellor
